Waiting for Thanksgiving
Waiting and waiting. This weeks’s been alot of waiting. I got pretty sick Monday, and am pretty stubborn about taking medicine, so I didn’t. You should have heard me. I secretly enjoy having a ridiculously sore throat, because then I get to play with pitches that I usually am unable to hit. I’ve also been waiting on these two big grants that tend to be indeterminately open. One should be funded any moment…and the other, well, that’s where you come in.
(I’m doing that thing that I hate, where we jump from one holiday to the next before the holiday is even over…BUT Thanksgiving is coming soon!)
Part of waiting, is that once you can get past the just waiting part, you get into the creative waiting part….and here’s the creation:
I used to loathe Thanksgiving, but since I’ve been in Ukraine, it’s become my ultimate favorite – right up there with people’s Birthdays (getting older is so cool!). On this Thanksgiving, I’m asking, if at your dinners, your gatherings, you’d be willing to ask your friends and family to donate money to the Accessibility Project https://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=resources.donors.contribute.projDetail&projdesc=343-181. You could bring this up eating around the table, or theme your dinner this way, have a donation cover charge for your celebration, or what have you…everything is possible. I’m bringing it up now, because this way just occurred to me, and I want you to have time to think and plan…also, I’m willing to help out however I can! Contact me, and we can either set up a thanksgiving skype interaction, or I can prepare something and mail it to you, or we can figure something out together….basically, I’m willing to brainstorm and create options and ways with you in order to get the funds raised….according to the website, we’re still waiting on $4500, but I know that it’s less than this – maybe by $2000 less.
I know and understand, especially around the holidays that money starts to feel tight, and alot of times we think of donations as HUGE amounts, but honestly, anything helps us get closer to our goal, and closer to stop having to wait, and closer to getting to start the project.
Being so far away, and in Ukraine, and for so long, I have this loyalty Ukraine, like Ukraine is a huge part of me now. I also have this very solid perspective, understanding and loyalty to my ‘rodnoy’ land. Because I am not there, on this Thanksgiving 2010, will you be doubly thankful to how wheelchair accessible the US is? and how many opportunities you have in America? In this request, I’m not asking you to be prideful, but to be globally aware that not everywhere is America (nor should it be), and that change is always possible, and that you can meaningfully help change something with this project….
So what are you waiting for? Donate already! https://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=resources.donors.contribute.projDetail&projdesc=343-181
Also, please don’t wait until Thanksgiving to donate! As soon as you can, donate!
As Shane told me, right before he got married to Myrna, “Reality only happens in the now”…so help take charge and make this reality happen
